Famed Race Driver Dick Trickle Dies, Suicide Suspected : NPR:

A fan favorite who gained nationwide fame because of his name, Trickle was known for both his many wins and his huge personality. But he may never have gotten over a granddaughter’s death, friends say. Trickle was 71.

Oh wow. I remember hearing about (and of course giggling) this guy when Dad was involved in ARCA back in the ’80s, and of course whenever Dad watched NASCAR (I may have actually been to a Daytona 500 race he participated in, but seeing how I was 5 years old at the time and totally disinterested I just slept through it). He was definitely one of the more good-natured racers in recent history.

I still feel kind of bad for snorting when I read the headline…

Considering all the site-breaking changes that already take place without any warning, the enmity Tumblr has with certain add-on developers, and the general lousy business practices in regards to transparency and turnover rate, can it really get any worse than it is?

The answer is yes. There was a great feature on Gizmodo on how Yahoo completely and royally fucked up Flickr, and I’d rather not have the same thing happen to this platform.

Eh. I think there’s a lot of wailing and rending of clothes happening way too early. There’s no guarantee Tumblr will accept (although I wouldn’t put that sort of stupidity past the current owner/operators, given how clumsily they already handle their site); either way, I think at some point the whole thing’ll disintegrate and go the way of LiveJournal due to incompetence no matter what. Both Tumblr and Yahoo! like to shoot themselves in the foot, after all.

Your writing on the (for now) last post touched me very deeply, if only because I relate so much on mothers being extremely scary when angry: mine yelled, threw things, threatened to do violent things, occasionally hitting (a slap, a spank or pinching) - and then being left in charge of younger siblings and repeating the same actions until I know better. My mother isn't bad, she was simply overwhelmed to raise a kid at a relatively young age (she was 20 when I was born) and she didnt know better

Heh, those were actually the same circumstances around my birth. Mom had only turned 20 a few months before I was born, and though she would never say as much I’m pretty sure there was a lot of burning resentment that because of me, she had to put her life on hold. During some uglier moments growing up, she would tell me I was an accident.

This is also one of the reasons I have such a grudge against poverty, since it was the root of a lot of Mom’s anger. Feeling so powerless and being forced into a situation you never thought would happen on top of it is fertile breeding ground for abuse of all kinds since it feels like there’s no other outlet available to you. Add to that the health and quality of life issues that come with poverty and you have a lot of unnecessary suffering going on in this country.

It’s something that never leaves you, even though rationally you know your parents didn’t purposefully say and do such nasty things. Fortunately these days it’s relatively easier to find and get help for it, but if we could cut off the problem at the source it’d eliminate a lot of fallout.
